AFS GLOBAL STEM INNOVATORS PROGRAM
I’m Hiral Kashibhatla, a Grade 10 student from The Hyderabad Public School, Ramanthapur, and we had the incredible opportunity to be part of the AFS Global STEM Innovators Program 2025, held from 17 to 24 June. Alongside me were my friends and fellow students, Akshaya Manginipalli and Hemachandra Dukkipati. Together, we were among the 44 students selected from across the country to participate in this immersive and transformative experience.
Organized by AFS Intercultural Programs India in collaboration with FLAME University and Sanjay Ghodawat International School, Pune, this program brought together young minds to explore how STEM, sustainability, and intercultural competence can come together to create real-world impact and global changemakers.
Some of the most exciting parts of the program included the Effect+ workshops that introduced us to global systems, the SDGs, and changemaking. We engaged in hands-on sessions covering design thinking, data visualization, and the use of technology for social impact. One of the highlights was visiting IUCAA for an up-close look at space science. We also took part in powerful panel discussions around innovation, gender equity in STEM, and interdisciplinary approaches.
At FLAME University, we attended sessions on identity, collaboration, and systems mapping. We also got to explore community mapping, ethical tech, human-centered design thinking, and data-driven storytelling—something that really opened my eyes to how STEM goes beyond the classroom.
Later, at Sanjay Ghodawat International School in Pune, we dove deep into topics like astrophysics, sustainable city design, and renewable energy careers. Us changemakers especially loved working on changemaking prototypes and pitching SDG-based solutions at BP India. We even got to play drone soccer and experience a true cultural exchange with other students!
What stood out the most was how the entire program promoted inclusive teamwork, critical thinking, and systems-based problem solving. It really prepared us to take on leadership roles in shaping a better, more sustainable world
This program helped us see STEM not just as science and technology, but also as a way to tell stories, build sustainability, and bring people together across cultures. I truly believe it’s experiences like this that are shaping the leaders of tomorrow.
